Nicholas Mosse Pottery

This is the setting of the Nicholas Mosse Pottery shop and factory in Bennetsbridge, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland. It once was a flour Mill using the power from this water source, the river Nore. I visited here along with 29 potters and their non-potter traveling companions in a trip organized by the Potter's Council.

Here we are in the front room of the shop. There are two floors and several rooms of mostly pottery, but other crafts as well.

Nick Mosse himself gave the tour. Genial, he smilingly and proudly conducted us through the extensive studios, and clever, he and his wife built this business from the ground up as they say. Here he is showing us the shelves full of ware that go into the kilns on tracks, railroad fashion.

The distinctive look of the N. Mosse pottery is stamped on mostly with sponges or using sticky stamps as resist. Sharon here is painting mugs with a sheep design.

After watching this process and all the other operations taking place in the old mill, I had to buy a souvenir - a sheep mug from the seconds department. It looked good to me. And it reminded me of the many sheep we saw driving through the Irish countryside.
